Your Vision In A Job Interview

In college, I took a career prep course that taught us how to write a resume, craft a compelling cover letter and probably the most important of them all…..Interview well!

*Gulp*

Interviews. You either love them, deal with them or hate everything about them.

Our assignment that day was to conduct a mock interview in front of the class in pairs. How embarrassing right!?

So, we teamed up and I was pair up with a determined male soccer player. I had a feeling it was his duty to make my interview tough to show off to his friends, impress the teacher and it was hell.

I will tell though interviews at that time didn’t affect me because my sweet, bubbly personality always impressed the interviewer’s and I usually got passed the first round. Just being honest here.

But during this class, I started to sweat.

And all of sudden the stuttering began.

Mr. Soccer player asked questions on top of questions “So, what do you mean by that?” “Can you explain in more detail?” “Why does that matter to you?”

Then he did it.

He asked the dreaded “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” question. Ugh…. I don’t know I’m in my 3rd-year of college, I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, I don’t even want this pretend job anymore. Can I pull my application, please? Get me out of here.

I took a deep breath (I didn’t do yoga at this time).

Decided to answer the question honestly “I’ll be happy, married, doing my own thing, work on something I’m passionate about, inspire others and have a few babies.”

Immediately, my teacher stopped me.

“Steph, I appreciate your honesty but you don’t want to mention that you want to ‘do your own thing’ and start a family in an interview.”

Ummmm...why not?

Because it will hurt your chances at getting the job.”

Wow. There it was right in front of me. We can analyze that statement above and label it a bunch of things so I’ll pick just one lesson out of that.

If you’re going to pretend limited me then I don’t want that for my life. This is my life and I’m living it the way I want to live because most women before me couldn’t.

Okay, I’m off my pedestal now.

Fast forward to present times. I’ve started an online marketing consulting business, getting married in 9 months, living happily in California, doing my own thing and will certainly have babies in the future...10 years. Haha just kidding. Not that long.

I’d love to know.

What are you standing for today?

What do you want in your life and won’t compromise?

What is non-negotiable?

When has someone doubted your ability and you showed them?

Tell me.

P.S. Last thing: If you want to get clear on your marketing strategy or actually create one, launch a podcast with a social media action plan, get clarity on your services or offers, or strategically launch something like a Kickstarter I’m your gal. I have 2 client spots available.
